This magnificent cocktail is called the Michelada. Sometimes referred to as the Mexican Bloody Mary, it’s actually pronounced "The Michelada." The Michelada was created sometime in the 1960s, I think, by a guy named Michel Ésper. Michel enjoyed his beers served in a lemonade glass with a salted rim and ice. I’m assuming one day, Michel wanted a Bloody Mary, but unfortunately, the bar didn't have any vodka, only beer, so the Michelada was born.
Ingredients:
1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
1-3 tablespoons of hot sauce to taste (if you like your drink really spicy, add as much as you want; I use Tapatio)
2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons of soy sauce
1 12oz bottle of Mexican beer (I use Tecate)
Top off with Clamato (you can also use tomato juice)
Instructions:
Using a large glass, ideally 22oz, minimum 16oz.
Rub a slice of lime around the rim of the glass, then rim the glass with kosher salt. If you want to go spicier, you can also rim the glass with chili powder, celery salt, or what I use, Saint Lucifer's habanero table spice.
Once the glass is sufficiently seasoned, fill the glass about halfway with ice.
Add ingredients in the order listed above. Stir the ingredients thoroughly until sufficiently mixed and enjoy!
My Review of The Michelada:
Years ago, I had a terrible boss who I absolutely despised. One day I woke up to learn that this terrible boss was fired. I learned this because this crazy lady emailed the company to deny doing all the terrible shit that got her fired. This lady absolutely did all of that shit! I thoroughly enjoyed this email, so I did what anyone in my position would do: I printed the email, framed it, and took it out for drinks to my favorite Mexican restaurant at the time called Salsa’s. One of the delicious cocktails I enjoyed that day was the Michelada. After my 3rd or 5th Michelada that beautiful morning, Alex the bartender gave me some words of wisdom: "I may walk slow, but I would never walk backward." To this very day, I’m still not 100% sure what Alex was talking about, but at the time it perfectly spoke to the moment I was experiencing. It remains the wisest piece of advice given to me by a 23-year-old bartender at a Mexican restaurant.
This Michelada recipe is exactly the recipe that Alex used on that magical morning. Tasting this delicious cocktail brings back fond memories of better days. If you would like to reminisce or fantasize about your horrible boss being fired, follow the instructions above and enjoy.
